Online NewsletterApril 2009 - Take a step forwardWe've noticed a subtle shift in recent weeks in the news media. They have gone from daily headlines about how bad the economy is to starting to cover stories of how people are coping with what is now being tagged "the Great Recession." We've even seen stories about how creative people are in finding ways to survive and prosper in spite of whatever challenges they are facing. We believe this is the most opportune time to create new endeavors. Why? Because in the midst of chaos is when the creative forces are most available. It's when the opportunities are plentiful and ripe for further exploration. Look around you. What is wrong? What can be done to fix it? What do you see that is broken? What can be done to make better products, systems, processes, methods? Look for opportunities all around you. Where ever there is a "problem," there is also an opportunity to do something better, faster, easier, more efficiently or more effectively. We are seeing businesses and governments look at their problems in new ways. Before, maybe they would just buy something and not think about it. Now, they may have to budget more carefully, they don't have as much money or as many people available and so they are being more careful with their resources. Managers are asking employees for ideas where before, they may have just gone ahead with whatever idea the manager had. We are seeing people working together in new ways, coming up with better ways of doing business, learning that teamwork really does work. We are seeing groups prosper where last year they were struggling. Why? Because when they really recognized that they were in trouble, everyone pulled together and made a commitment to doing something together. Now, they are seeing the positive results of that.
In order for the "old ways" to change to the "new ways," structures and habits have to break down in order to be restructured or redesigned or reborn into the new ways. That is part of what is happening now in our society, in our country and in our world. Things are changing. That is the good news! When things are changing and when there is chaos, that is the time when creativity is most able to burst forth to bring us new ways of being, new ways of doing business, new ways of relating to each other, new ways of working together. It is the time when we can re-create our future in a different way. In order to create something, we must transform raw materials into something new. By transforming raw materials, we are destroying what they were in order to make something new. Breaking down and falling apart is good. A good friend and teacher, Carole Doré used to say, "When things are falling apart, they are falling together!"
If many people did that, we would be out of our current recession before anyone knew what happened. Things can change when we want them to change. So, take a small step today. Tomorrow, take another small step. This month, every day take a small step toward something that feels right for you. “A journey of a thousand miles begins with one small step” If you are thinking about creating sources of income, new business ideas or exploring expansion of a existing business, our book Income Without a Job has some great exercises to assist with that.
