March 2012 ~ The Magic of Imagination

Bookmark and Share

For those of us who like movies or may have watched the recent Oscar awards, we can see the power of imagination come alive in movies.

From a simple idea that starts out in the mind of one person, more and more details are added to make it a rich story with interesting characters, lots of plot twists, some fun and laughter, sometimes elaborate costumes, interesting locations, and a theme that may have a message for us.

After all that, there are writers who make the original idea into a finished script, the choice of actors to play the parts, costume designers to create the wardrobe, set designers to create the stage scenes, directors, producers, support staff, makeup people, sound people and a myriad of others who become involved.

Lots more people are involved once the movie starts filming and the shooting location may change depending on the story.

After all the filming is done, there is the post-production work to fine-tune it into a finished product.  It could be many months or even years after the movie has finished shooting before it is put "in the can" as they say — meaning a finished film ready to ship.

Then the film distribution industry gets involved to get the finished product out to theaters.  Theaters are an entire industry of themselves.

Eventually, we – the audience – get to see the movie.

Some time later come nominations, voting and awards, culminating for Hollywood in the annual Oscar presentations.

You may be wondering at this point what this has to do with our theme for this website and this newsletter – "income without a job."

Movies and all the work that goes into them — from a single idea to a finished product — is simply an analogy to any idea we might have of our own.  There could be many different people involved in it before it is "finished" and much time could pass before we see the results of our original idea.

This a reminder that no matter how small the idea, there are things that we need to do to keep it moving.  We need to work out our plans, further develop our story and our initial ideas, select our color schemes if it is a product, polish our presentations if it is a service offering, get our product or service out to our customers, and monitor the progress of our idea unfolding.  We must continue to be actively involved in our idea in some way to see it to the finished result.

We can’t just say: I want to write a book and then expect the book to be magically written for us and plopped down in the bookstores.  Or we can't just say: I want to have a retail store and then expect the store to be stocked with products, employees hired and financing be obtained without our active involvement.  WE must be involved in the process all along the way.

And, all along the way, we must continue to believe that our idea is valuable and that it will come to fruition.  If we give up on it, it could just fade away into oblivion.  Some ideas are just creative sparks that go nowhere and that is OK, too.  They can become fertilizer for other ideas or we can build upon one idea, refining it, playing around with options or choices, until it satisfies us and then we can go forward with the revised idea.

Whether you have a small idea or a large idea, you have to believe in it and keep doing whatever is needed to see it come into physical form.

Each seed of an idea has the full potential within it, just like a small plant seed.  To make a plant seed grow, you need to water it, provide nourishment (sun, water, fertilizer) and protect it from harm so that it can grow to its full potential.

Your own ideas also need to be nourished and protected, just like physical seeds.

What ideas do you have that are worth the time and investment they need to grow into full potential?  If you have other ideas just hanging around doing nothing, maybe it’s time to bury them and start a new idea?  Or, maybe it is time to put some amount of effort into those ideas of value to help them grow into their full potential.

Wherever you are on your own journey this month, we wish you warm sunshine, gentle spring rain and soothing winds to nourish the seeds of your own ideas.

If you are thinking about creating sources of income, new business ideas or exploring expansion of a existing business, our book Income Without a Job has some great exercises to assist with that.
