spike bullet April 2008 - Friendship - a change of pace

  Printer-friendly version

Family matters took precedence this month so our planned article was not ready on the regular schedule.

We remind everyone:

  • If there are people in your life that you care about, let them know while there is still time to do so.
  • Take time to resolve conflicts with those you care about.

And, we want to share some of our favorite quotes and encourage you to take the time to be fully aware of the people you care about.

There is no greater love than that of someone who encourages another to be themselves, to grow into someone new — risking that they will find a way without them.
Yet, giving that freedom and support deepens the bonds of trust, friendship, respect and love.
Thank you for choosing to share your path with me, wherever it may lead us, together or apart.
— Barbara Taylor

What is a friend? A single soul in two bodies.
— Aristotle

A friend is a gift you give yourself.
— Robert Louis Stevenson

If you have one true friend, you have more than your share.
— Thomas Fuller

Don’t walk in front of me, I may not follow.
Don’t walk behind me, I may not lead.
Walk beside me and just be my friend.
— Albert Camus

Let the soul be assured that somewhere in the Universe it should rejoin its friend, and it would be content and cheerful for a thousand years.
— Emerson

There are two elements that go to the composition of friendship:
One is Truth. Before them I may think aloud.
I am in the presence of a person so real and equal,
I may deal with them with simplicity and wholeness . . .
The other element of friendship is Tenderness.
Can another be so blessed and we so pure that we can offer them tenderness?
When a friend becomes dear to me, I have touched the goals of Fortune.
— Emerson

We must be our own friend before we can be another’s.
There can never be deep peace between two spirits, never mutual respect, until in their dialogue each stands for the whole world.
The only way to have a friend is to be one.
— Emerson

I will receive from them not what they have, but what they are.
They shall give me that which properly they cannot give me, but which emanates from them.
— Emerson

What is the secret of your life?" asked Mrs. Browning of Charles Kingsley.
"Tell me, that I may make mine beautiful, too."
He replied: "I had a friend."
— Related by William Channing Gannett

This is going to be a solo flight.
I’m sorry for that, but it’s the only way I can do What I have to do just now.
We’ve done so much together,
Discovered the world,
Found a home for our deepest feelings,
Shared losses, wiped away each other’s tears.
Now I’ve found a new part of me that wants to grow. I have visions of a better me Not really that much different. No one changes just like that,
But enough to make the way our world is seem older than I remembered it to be.
Just as soon as I try my wings,
I’ll come back and teach you how to fly.
— David Viscott

A constant friend is thing rare and hard to find.
— Plutarch

Without friends, no one would choose to live, even if he had all other goods.
— Aristotle

Let your best be for your friend.
If she must know the ebb of your tide, let her know its flood also.
For what is your friend that you should seek her with hours to kill?
Seek her always with hours to live.
For it is hers to fill your need, but not your emptiness.
And in the sweetness of friendship, let there be laughter, and sharing of pleasures.
For in the dew of little things, the heart finds its morning and is refreshed.
— Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet

Do not keep the alabaster boxes of your love and tenderness sealed up until your friends are dead.
Fill their lives with sweetness.
Speak approving, cheering words while their ears can hear them, and while their hearts can be thrilled and made happier by them.
— George William Childs

A friend is someone who knows all about you and loves you just the same.
— Elbert Hubbard

May you always have a dream to follow and one to call your friend.
— Author unknown

Who hears me, understands me, becomes mine — a possession for all time.
— Emerson

When two people are at one In their innermost hearts,
They shatter even the strength of Iron or of bronze.
And when two people understand each other in their innermost hearts,
Their words are sweet and strong, like the fragrance of orchids.
— I Ching

There’s a wonderful thing that gold cannot buy,
A blessing that’s rare and true,
And that’s the gift of a wonderful friend
Like the friend I have in you.
— Author unknown

Now may the warming love of friends
Surround you as you go Down the path of light and laughter
Where the happy memories grow.
— Helen Lowrie Marshall
